Crawl Space Encapsulation planning in Piedmont

Mill-village fabric and lower-density properties can involve aging assemblies, crawlspaces, and long runoff paths.

A village built entirely around one family's water-powered mill

Piedmont isn't a chartered town — it's the mill village Henry Pinckney Hammett and his father-in-law William Bates built after buying 415 acres at Garrison Shoals on the Saluda River in the early 1860s. Piedmont Manufacturing Company was founded in 1873, and Piedmont Number One was running by 1876 with 5,000 spindles and 112 looms; by 1892, after a second mill went up across the river in 1888, the operation ran 47,000 spindles and 1,300 looms, and by 1900 it was the world's largest cotton-textile producer by output. The company built housing, schools, and churches for its workers — even naming streets like Transylvania Street for the North Carolina counties many employees came from — before selling the village homes to private owners in the 1950s. The mill itself burned in 1983.

River-shoals housing built for millworkers, not for moisture control

Piedmont's older housing stock was built by a textile company to shelter shoals-side mill workers, not to any later moisture-management standard, and much of it sits close to the Saluda River where crawl spaces are more exposed to standing groundwater and seasonal humidity than housing built farther from the river. In the Upstate's humid subtropical climate, that proximity compounds the ordinary risk of a vented, unsealed crawl space drawing damp outside air in and holding it against the framing — which is why a Piedmont crawl space plan should factor in a property's distance from the old shoals and mill site along with its construction date.

Crawl space services near the old Piedmont mill site

Tell us how close your Piedmont home sits to the old mill site

Distance from the Saluda River and the former mill village affects crawl space exposure, so include that along with the home's age, current condition, prior work, and access. Provider availability in this unincorporated area varies, so confirm credentials directly.

Piedmont spans two counties — confirm the right one

The Piedmont mill village straddles the Greenville and Anderson county line, so confirm which county's floodplain, grading, and permitting rules apply to your specific parcel before scoping crawl space work.
