Simpsonville grew from a crossroads where the old Stage Road crossed a former Cherokee trail known later as the Georgia Road. Blacksmith Peter Simpson arrived in 1838 and set up shop there, merchant Silas Gilbert soon opened a general store, and the crossroads took Simpson's name informally well before it was official — the post office serving the area was actually called "Plain" from 1838 until it was renamed Simpsonville in 1886, the same period the Greenville and Laurens Railroad reached the area. The town wasn't incorporated until August 13, 1901, and a textile mill arrived in 1908.
